About the project

The Korean city of Suncheon launched an ideas competition for placing an art platform in an area with many historical and cultural traces, playing a vital role in urban regeneration and economic revitalization. The platform consists of an art center and a visitor center, a place that becomes an exhibition space, cultural exchange, gathering in a community hub, and a Yeonja-ru, a symbol that creatively reinterprets the old city gate.

The concept that outlined our proposal started from the conviction that nature is the most beautiful form of art. In this idea, the volumetric proposal is subordinate to the natural environment, the construction is largely lowered underground, and the entire terrain remains an ample green space, a park and square where public access is allowed.

The tetrahedral shapes pierce the ground, rise just enough to invite people inside and are positioned to be in dialogue with urban bustle, but also with the distant mountains that surround the city. The pedestrian square, an ample free space that resulted from pushing the construction as far back as possible, opens the perspective from the main street towards the river and the Yeonja-Ru symbol.

The partially emerged volumes delimit this animated zone from a more introverted one, full of vegetation, from which the green roofs can also be reached.
